Butterscotch Cupcakes Now at Boo’s!

ImageI’m pleased to introduce Boo’s Butterscotch Cupcakes, now available at Boo’s Philly Cheesesteaks in Silver Lake!

Boo’s was looking to create a dessert that would complement their delicious Philly cheesesteaks and hoagies, and I came up with this homage to the Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpet, another Philly favorite. The Boo’s Butterscotch Cupcake is moist, golden cake with butterscotch chips, topped with butterscotch frosting.

If you haven’t been to Boo’s, there’s no better time than now to check it out! Get yourself a cheesesteak and a couple of butterscotch cupcakes.

Welcome, Garlic and Chocolate!

From left: Maple-Bacon, Gruyere-Parmesan, and Garlic Lover’s pretzels

We had a fabulous time seeing new and familiar faces at The Secret Fork #8 over Labor Day weekend. In addition to our Original, Maple-Bacon, and Gruyere-Parmesan pretzels, we debuted two new flavors: Garlic Lover’s and Chocolate Chip!

Think of Garlic Lover’s as the Bavarian version of your favorite pizzeria’s garlic knot. Fresh garlic, Italian parsley, and olive oil are blended together, then brushed on our twists before they go in the oven.

Original and Chocolate Chip pretzels

Chocolate Chip takes the chocolate-covered hard pretzel and turns it inside out: semisweet morsels are baked into the dough for a gooey, salty-sweet taste sensation in almost every bite!

Hello, My Name Is Maple-Bacon

Hi there. Have we met before? Perhaps on your breakfast plate, or maybe you’ve come across me in a doughnut or ice cream (I’ve been getting around these days). I’m salty, smoky bacon bathed in sweet maple syrup, and you can now find me on Uhu’s soft pretzels. People couldn’t get enough of me at The Secret Fork last month! I’ll be getting down this summer at the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena‘s concert series on select dates. We should get to know each other, don’t you think?

Happy June!

Summer is almost here, and Uhu is looking forward to a busy one. We’re excited to be part of the food court at the Levitt Pavilion‘s free summer concert series in Pasadena!

Here are the dates we’ll be there and who’s playing:

6/21/12  8p  Dustbowl Revival (bluegrass/roots/folk)
6/28/12  8p  The Watson Twins/Jesse Sykes (alt country/indie folk)
7/19/12  8p  Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto (cumbia/Afro-Colombian/folklorico)
7/22/12  7p  USC Jazz Quartet (jazz)

Grab a soft pretzel, find a spot on the lawn, and enjoy some live music under the stars! The Levitt is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its summer concert series with a pretty awesome lineup.

Uhu will also be at Chefs Center of California’s Friday Food Fair and Artisanal Marketplace in Pasadena on the last two Fridays in June: 6/22 and 6/29, 6pm-9pm. Every week features a different gathering of food trucks and vendors and gives you the chance to tour the kitchen where we work.

Hope to see you soon! Stay tuned for more Uhu updates…

When Pretzel Met Pudding

We had so much fun collaborating with Crème Caramel LA on their pretzel bread pudding (PBP)! The salty, doughy, custardy, caramel-y mashup was a crowd-pleaser at Unique LA this past weekend. And Uhu’s pretzels went over well, too. If you didn’t make it to Unique LA and want to try PBP for yourself, get thee to Fix Coffee in Echo Park tomorrow: Crème Caramel will be there from 9 till 6 for brunch and dessert during the Echo Park Art Walk.

This Weekend at Unique LA: Pretzels and Pretzel Bread Pudding!

There’s something heavenly about the pairing of salty and sweet. Uhu is very excited to be providing the salt for the sweet, sweet creations of Crème Caramel LA, who will be offering Pretzel Bread Pudding (wha?!?) at Unique LA‘s Spring Show this weekend, May 12 and 13, 11am-6pm, in Downtown Los Angeles.

For salt purists, Crème Caramel will also be serving Uhu’s pretzels: Original, Seeded (sunflower and pumpkin seeds), Gruyere-Parmesan, and Jalapeño-Cheddar.

Check out the rest of Creme Caramel’s menu for the show — we’re especially fond of the Thai Tea and Buko-Pandan.

Fun at The Secret Fork

On May 6, Uhu participated in its first Secret Fork, an underground pop-up marketplace that showcases local foodmakers and artisans. We had great fun sharing our pretzels: Original, Seeded, Gruyere-Parmesan (new flavor!) and Jalapeño-Cheddar. It was also wonderful to meet guests and fellow vendors —  especially Crème Caramel LA, who will be using Uhu pretzels to make a pretzel bread pudding! Stay tuned for more on that.

The Perfect Cookie

The combination of chocolate and ginger might sound strange. It certainly sounded strange to my friend Wendy, who was happy that I was bringing cookies to her holiday party but not enthusiastic about Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies. (“Gingerbread” sounded stale and unappetizing, she later told me.) But when she tasted one, she fell in love. Several years and baking sessions later (we used to spend afternoons in our little kitchens in NYC making double and triple batches to last us a month), Wendy and I are convinced that this is the perfect cookie. The ooey-gooey goodness of chocolate chips; the warmth of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg; the zing of fresh ginger — it has it all. And unlike many baked goods, the chewy chocolate gingerbread cookie improves with age. It tastes better a couple of days after baking, when the spices have had a chance to settle in. What more could you ask for? Well, maybe a glass of milk to wash them down.

Have you tried Uhu’s Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies? What did you think? Let us know!

How do you like your pretzel?

Cheese, Plain, and Seeded PretzelsWe had fun introducing folks on Sunday at the Los Feliz Farmers Market to four kinds of soft pretzels: plain, cheddar, cheddar jalapeno, and seeded (pumpkin and sunflower seeds). Also new at the market: a vegan version of the horchata cupcake!

Is there a particular pretzel flavor you’d like Uhu to make? Let us know!

UPDATE, 5/1/2012: Uhu is no longer at the Los Feliz Farmers Market. We hope to see you soon at another market or pop-up event!

You can now find Uhu at the Los Feliz Farmers Market on Sundays, 9am to 2pm, at 1825 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027. Come get your fill of soft pretzels and cupcakes — our purple yam and horchata cupcakes were a hit this Sunday, and we’ll be featuring new flavors every week.
